Guidelines for Authors Submitting Manuscripts to California History

1. Length: We will consider manuscripts of any reasonable length, but those between twenty and thirty pages (including notes) that do not require extensive editing will be given preference. Authors of essays for special theme issues should observe the specific length limits announced for the special issues.

2. Documentation: Manuscripts should be documented with endnotes (printed double-spaced) according to the format in the Chicago Manual of Style 14th edition, which is the journal’s stylesheet. Manuscripts may be returned to authors because of problems with note format.

3. Printing: Authors should submit two copies of both manuscript and notes, along with a disk copy of the article, with file name, word processing program, and operating system (Windows, DOS, Linux, Macintosh, etc.) labeled. A stamped, self-addressed 9 by 12 envelope should accompany the manuscript. Paper copies of submissions must be printed (typed) and double-spaced throughout, with standard type size (font) and one-inch margins. Endnotes should begin on a separate page and must also be printed double-spaced using a standard type size.

4. Selection Criteria: All manuscripts are submitted to editorial referees, who advise on the selection of papers for publication. Manuscripts are evaluated on the basis of originality of subject, thoroughness of research, conceptual breadth, and literary style. Publishing decisions are made by the California History staff.

5. Illustrations: We want to make the quarterly as richly illustrated as possible. Authors should identify artistic and reproducible photographs, maps, line art, and other illustrations for their manuscripts. Although originals of the illustrations should not be submitted until requested, photocopies, identified and accompanied by captions and suggestions for location in the manuscript, may be included. Authors should endeavor to secure the photographs for their articles. Once photographs have been chosen for publication by the Calfornia History staff and the author, it will be the author’s responsibility to supply us with written permission to publish from the owner of the copyright. When needed, the editorial staff will assist in locating illustrations for articles accepted for publication.

6. Biographical Statement: With a manuscript, each author should send a four- or five-line, biographical statement (on disk as well), including professional activities, education, awards or recognition, and research interests, as the author would like it to appear at the end of the article.

7. Address and Email: Manuscripts and communications regarding manuscripts should be sent to: Dr. Janet Fireman, History Department, Loyola Marymount University, One LMU Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90045-8415. Email inquiries can be made to Dr. Fireman at jfireman@lmu.edu.
