This
first biography of its kind, The Stormy Life of Major Wm.
Gouverneur Morris in California and Alaska documents the life
of Morris, from his arrival in California in 1855 through
the almost twenty years in which he played an active role
in politics and government in the Golden State. While serving
for the Union during the Civil War, Morris held post in Los
Angeles, Santa Catalina Island, and the San Francisco Bay
area. He owned extensive property in the Napa Valley, and
served as a U.S. Marshall in Visalia. In 1874 Morris secured
